What Should I Avoid Before a Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage?
You booked your session. Maybe you've been dealing with swelling, sluggish digestion, post-surgical inflammation, or just that heavy, stuck feeling that tells you your body needs support. Whatever brought you here, I want you to get the absolute most out of your time on my table — and that process starts before you ever walk through the door.
After 10 years of working with clients, I can tell pretty quickly when someone has set themselves up for a great session — and when they've accidentally worked against themselves. The good news is that preparing for an MLD session is simple. But there are a few things worth knowing in advance, because most of them aren't what people expect.
Let's walk through the big three.
1. Avoid Heavy Meals Before Your Session
Your body is remarkably intelligent about resource allocation. When you eat a large meal, blood flow is redirected toward your digestive system to support that process — which means other systems, including your lymphatic system, are working with less. Lying down on a full stomach can also be physically uncomfortable, and that tension in your body works against the deep relaxation we're trying to create.
The goal of an MLD session is to get your body into a parasympathetic state — what we call rest-and-digest mode — because lymph flow thrives in calm, rhythmic environments. A heavy meal right before your appointment creates the opposite of that. Medical News Today
What to do instead: aim to eat something light one and a half to two hours before your session. Think a small protein snack, a piece of fruit, or a smoothie. Enough to feel grounded, not enough to feel full.
2. Skip the Lotions, Oils, and Skincare Products
This one surprises almost everyone, and I completely understand why. We're conditioned to moisturize before any appointment that involves our skin. But for lymphatic drainage, I need you to arrive with clean, dry skin — and here's the clinical reason why.
Dry skin contact is more effective for stimulating the stretch response needed by your lymph vessels. MLD works by applying a very specific, gentle stretch to the skin's surface to encourage lymphatic capillaries to open and move fluid. When the skin is coated in lotion or oil, that traction is reduced — and so is the effectiveness of the technique.
This applies to body lotion, facial moisturizer, body oils, and self-tanner. If you have a skincare routine you can't skip entirely, do it after your session rather than before. Your skin will still get taken care of — just in a different order.
3. Hydrate Well — But Know What That Actually Means
Dehydration is one of the most common and most underestimated things that limits the results of an MLD session. Lymph fluid is mostly water, so when your body is running low on fluids, your lymphatic system simply doesn't have what it needs to move efficiently. Stagnant lymph is harder to shift, which means more effort for less result. Medical News Today
What surprises many clients is that I'm not just talking about drinking water the morning of your appointment. Consistent hydration in the day or two leading up to your session matters just as much. A well-hydrated body responds dramatically better to MLD than one that's been running on coffee and not much else.
A practical benchmark: if you don't need to urinate immediately after your session, you are likely dehydrated. That's a real and reliable signal worth paying attention to.
Aim for at least 16 to 24 ounces of water in the hour before your session, and keep sipping throughout the day leading up to it.
A Few Other Things Worth Knowing
While the three points above are the most impactful for most clients, here are a few additional considerations I always mention:
🌿 Avoid alcohol the night before — alcohol is both inflammatory and dehydrating, which burdens the liver. Since your liver processes much of what your lymphatic system collects, you want it working in your favor, not catching up.
🌿 Wear loose, comfortable clothing — tight waistbands, shapewear, and restrictive clothing can impede lymph flow both during and after your session. Think soft cotton or athletic wear that doesn't compress anything.
🌿 Reschedule if you're acutely ill — active infections or fever are situations where MLD is not advisable, as it could spread pathogens throughout the body. If you're coming down with something, honor your body and reschedule. We'll be here when you're ready. Massagetherapy
Why Prep Actually Matters
I share all of this not to create a complicated checklist, but because I genuinely want your body to be positioned to receive the full benefit of this work. MLD is precise, intentional therapy — and the more aligned your body is when you arrive, the more deeply it can respond. Small choices like staying hydrated, arriving with clean skin, and keeping your meal light are the difference between a good session and a truly transformative one.
