Why Your Gua Sha Isn't Working — And the 3-Step Ritual That Actually Sculpts Your Face
Why Your Gua Sha Isn't Working — And the 3-Step Ritual That Actually Sculpts Your Face
Let me guess. You bought the gua sha. You watched the tutorials. You've been dragging it across your jawline every morning with genuine dedication — and it feels nice, but something is missing. Your face doesn't look as defined as the before-and-afters promised. You're wondering if you're doing it wrong, or if the whole thing is just overhyped.
You're not doing it wrong. You're just starting in the middle.
Gua sha is a finishing move. It was never meant to be the whole ritual — and when you use it without the steps that come before it, you're working on tissue that isn't ready. That's the secret most beauty content leaves out entirely.
Here's what actually works.
The Sequence Is Everything
There's a reason A-listers look that way in photographs. It's not just the lighting, the makeup, or the genetics. There's a ritual happening backstage — in glam rooms and dressing rooms and hotel bathrooms before major events — that most of us have never been taught.
I know this ritual because I use it on clients. Before weddings. Before galas. Before speaking engagements and photo shoots. It's a three-step sequence that takes about 20 minutes, and it works because each step prepares the tissue for the next one. Miss a step and you lose the compound effect. Follow the sequence and your face genuinely changes — not just at the surface, but in the underlying structure.
The three steps are lymphatic drainage, buccal massage, and gua sha. In that order. Always.
Step 1: Lymphatic Drainage — Clear the Pathway First
This is the step most people skip. It's also the reason their gua sha doesn't do what they hoped.
Your lymphatic system is responsible for moving fluid, waste, and inflammation out of your tissues. When it's sluggish — which it often is, especially if you've slept on your side, had a salty dinner, or are simply dealing with everyday stress — fluid pools in the face. You wake up puffy. Your jawline looks soft. Your under-eyes are heavy.
Manual lymphatic drainage on the face moves that fluid deliberately, opening the drainage pathways so everything that follows can work harder. Think of it as clearing the channel before you run water through it.
✨ You can read more about how lymphatic drainage works and what it does for the whole body in my post What Should I Avoid Before a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?
Step 2: Buccal Massage — Sculpt From the Inside Out
This is the technique Hollywood doesn't advertise. And it's the one that changes the actual shape of your face.
Buccal massage is performed from inside the mouth, working along the buccinator muscle — the deep facial tissue that no surface tool can ever reach. It releases tension that has been held for years. It lifts the midface. It defines the jawline in a way that feels almost impossible until you experience it yourself.
I've written a lot about this technique because I think it's genuinely one of the most underused tools in facial wellness. If you're curious about the deeper clinical side of what it does, What Can a Buccal Massage Do For Me? is a good place to start.
Step 3: Gua Sha — Define and Seal at the Surface
Now — now — you pick up the gua sha.
With your lymphatic pathways open and your deep tissue released, gua sha becomes a completely different tool. You're not dragging stone across tight, unprepared tissue anymore. You're sculpting a face that is ready to be sculpted. You'll see more lift, more definition, more of that sharp jaw and high cheekbone effect that made you buy the stone in the first place.
This is the finishing move. Five minutes. Surface work. Done.
Twenty Minutes of Intention Beats an Hour of Guesswork
I've been doing this work for a long time. Massage therapy, lymphatic drainage, Reiki, yoga — all of it comes back to the same principle: the body responds when you work with its systems, not around them. This ritual is no different.
When you understand why the sequence works, you stop guessing and start seeing results.
Take the Ritual Home
I put all three techniques into a short video course called The Snatched Ritual — three videos, one for each step, designed so you can learn the sequence once and follow along as many times as you want. Before your wedding. Before your next event. Before any morning you want to walk in feeling that prepared.
It's $47. It's yours forever. And it's the closest thing to having my hands on your face without being in my treatment room.
