How Do I Prepare for My First Buccal Massage?
How Do I Prepare for My First Buccal Massage?
When I tell new clients I offer buccal massage, I usually get that look — the polite, slightly puzzled one that says, "I have no idea what that is, but I'm nodding anyway." Then I tell them it's the treatment A-listers swear by before stepping onto the red carpet. And just like that-they're in.
Buccal massage has been quietly transforming faces in Hollywood for years. But here in the Upstate, it's still something most people haven't heard of — let alone tried. As one of the few practitioners offering buccal massage in the Greenville, SC area, I get a lot of first-timers through my door at Soul Vibration Wellness. And the question I hear most before that first session is always some version of: "What do I need to do to get ready?"
Let me walk you through it.
What Is Buccal Massage, Really?
Buccal massage is an intraoral facial treatment — meaning part of the work happens inside the mouth, along the inner cheeks and jaw muscles. It targets deep facial tension that regular massage simply can't reach from the outside. Think sculpted jawline, released TMJ tightness, reduced puffiness, and a kind of facial reset that has to be felt to be understood. Sessions are typically 20 to 30 minutes — shorter than you might expect, but powerfully effective because of how precisely the technique works. You can learn about it more here.
Who Is Buccal Massage Good For?
Before we get to prep, it helps to know if buccal is right for you. This treatment works beautifully for:
✅ TMJ pain or jaw tension — especially if you clench or grind
✅ Chronic facial tension — from stress, screens, or just carrying the weight of the world in your jaw
✅ Sinus congestion — the drainage effects are real and often immediate
✅ Post-dental work recovery — waiting 24–48 hours after an intensive procedure is the only rule here
✅ Post-lip filler — buccal can help smooth and settle results beautifully
✅ Pre-event glow — weddings, galas, charity soirees, fundraising balls — buccal sculpts and depuffs in ways that photograph stunningly
✅ Detox support — the lymphatic component pairs especially well if you're in a cleansing or detox season and if you know me I’m always encouraging lympahtic drainage! Learn why it’s so important.
One thing to note: If you've recently had Botox or filler, please wait 2 to 3 weeks before booking. The treatment involves intentional pressure along the face and jaw, and we want your results fully settled before we work in that area.
How to Prepare for Your Session
🌿 Skip the Skincare That Morning
Come to your session with a clean, product-free face. No serums, no moisturizer, no SPF — nothing. I apply a specialized oil during the session that works best on a clear canvas, and layering it over your regular products actually interferes with the technique.
🌿 Brush Your Teeth Before You Come In
This one's important and I always appreciate clients who think ahead here. Since part of this work happens inside the mouth, fresh breath makes the experience more comfortable for both of us. A simple brush (and floss if you have time) is all you need.
🌿 Hydrate Well Beforehand
Drink plenty of water before your appointment. Buccal massage has a significant lymphatic component — we're actively moving fluid out of the face and directing it toward the lymph nodes in the clavicle area. When you're well-hydrated, that drainage process works so much more efficiently. You'll feel the difference.
🌿 Plan for a Short Consult First
If it's your first time, we'll do a brief consultation before we start. I want to make sure you're comfortable with intraoral work and that there aren't any contraindications we need to be aware of. It's a quick conversation, but it sets the tone for a session that's fully tailored to you.
What to Expect During the Session
The sensation is pressure — intentional, specific, and deeper than a typical facial massage. Most clients describe it as feeling very relaxing, and the release they feel afterward is profound. Your jaw and facial muscles hold a surprising amount of tension, and when that gets addressed properly? People almost always leave looking visibly lighter. The whole session typically runs 20 to 30 minutes. You don't need to bring anything special — just yourself, your clean face, and a bottle of water for after.
