7 Most Common Questions About Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a popular form of alternative medicine that has been used for centuries to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and relieve muscle tension. I have a feeling that the questions I get now are similar to ones that perhaps people of ancient China, India or Greece asked. There are questions that just seem to be on rotation in peoples minds. Whether you're new to massage therapy or a seasoned veteran, you may have some questions about the practice. In this post, I'll answer some of the most frequently asked questions about massage therapy.

  1. What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy involves manipulating the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, and joints, to promote relaxation, relieve pain, and improve overall well-being.

  2. What are the benefits of massage therapy?

Massage therapy has numerous benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety, relieving muscle tension and pain, improving circulation and immune function, and promoting relaxation and improved sleep.

  3. What types of massage are there?

There are many different types of massage, including Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, hot stone massage, and aromatherapy massage, among others. Each type of massage has its own unique benefits and techniques. There are so many modalities of massage that even I am discovering new ones every year! This year I was asked by a client if I do buccal massage. I had no clue what this was (it’s lymphatic drainage of the face from inside the mouth!) and I was so intrigued. I love being in a profession that learning is a lifelong pursuit. I’m definitely never going to get bored!

  4. What happens during a massage therapy session?

During a massage therapy session, you will typically lie on a massage table while the therapist uses their hands, fingers, and sometimes their forearms and elbows to apply pressure to your muscles and soft tissues. The pressure can range from gentle to deep depending on your preferences and the type of massage you are receiving. Always communicate with your massage therapist. I like to tell my clients YOU are the expert on your body so if the pressure is too light, speak up! If the pressure is too deep, speak up! We can’t know for certain what your pain threshold is like so communication is key.

  5. Do I need to undress for a massage?

Many people wonder if they need to undress for a massage therapy session. The answer is typically yes, but you can leave on as much clothing as you feel comfortable with. Most therapists will provide draping to cover any areas of the body that are not being worked on. I always tell people undress to your comfort level, because as long as your comfortable you’ll be able to fully relax and enjoy the experience. A good massage therapist can give an amazing massage either way. If anyone ever makes you feel like you have to take off clothes for a massage to be effective, I’d say turn around and walk out of their office. This is a major red flag.

  6. How often should I get a massage?

The frequency of massage therapy sessions depends on your individual needs and preferences. Some people choose to get massages once a week, while others may only get one once a month or once a year. It's important to listen to your body and schedule massages as needed to maintain your overall health and well-being. If you have a chronic condition or pain it’s best to go in more frequently, every 2-4 weeks if you are able. It will help to mitigate symptoms and prevent further issues long term. If you work at a desk, are an athlete or have a job that requires repetitive motion and has a high chance of repetitive stress injury, I also would advice going at least once if not twice a month to help with preventing injuries and maintaining the health of your musculoskeletal system.

  7. Is massage therapy safe for everyone?

While massage therapy is generally safe for most people, there are some conditions that may make it unsafe or uncomfortable. If you have any medical conditions or concerns, it's important to talk to your doctor before getting a massage. Additionally, certain types of massage, such as deep tissue massage, may not be suitable for everyone.

In conclusion, massage therapy is a safe and effective form of alternative medicine that can provide numerous benefits for both the mind and body. If you have any questions or concerns about massage therapy, don't hesitate to talk contact me.
